Defense as Decision-Making

The best defense guide teaches choice, not button order. Players need to know when to study, when to stand ground, when to move, and when to convert a safe opening.

Decision Framework

  • Block when learning rhythm or surviving unfamiliar strings.
  • Parry when the timing and reward are worth the risk.
  • Dodge when repositioning is safer than contact defense.
  • Use movement tools when boss scale, camera, or area danger changes the problem.

Launch Verification

Exact defensive rules must be confirmed from tutorials and boss testing, then connected to boss pages and settings pages.

Confirmed vs. Unconfirmed

The confirmed layer is simple: the 2024 PlayStation hands-on build allowed blocking, parrying, and dodging, and successful active defense could create counterattack opportunities. Exact guard durability, chip damage, parry windows, dodge invulnerability, difficulty modifiers, and attack-color rules are not yet confirmed for the retail build. The guide will keep those two layers separate.

Practical Training Loop

Choose one early enemy, observe without attacking, block the sequence, then test parry and dodge on separate attempts. Record which choice leaves Soul close enough to punish. This controlled comparison is more reliable than repeatedly changing weapons, timing, and distance at once.
